Erbil, Kurdistan - Iraq (KRP.org) - Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani congratulates the people of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region for the successful provincial elections of 31 January 2009.

The President described these elections as an important step in strengthening the democratic process in Iraq and said "we are pleased that changes are brought about through the ballot and not through the use of force."

"We respect the will of the people of Iraq. We hope that this was an emphatic message from Kurds, Arabs, Turkomens, Chaldaens, Assyrians, Muslims, Christians and Yezidis of the Kurdish areas to voice what they really want," the President said in a message.

He called on all sides to respect the will of the people and said "I hope and I call on the Iraqi parliament, the federal Iraqi government, the United Nations, the United States, and all concerned parties to respect the will of the people of these areas and to stop avoiding the implementation of Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution."

"Let us use this opportunity as an impetus to further strengthen democracy, fraternity and co-existence among our people. I thank all the people of the "disputed areas" for their strong participation in these elections and for sending a strong message. I congratulate this victory to them," he continued.

"I also thank the Iraqi police and federal army, and the Kurdistan Region peshmergas and police and security forces for ensuring security during these elections," said the President. He also thanked the Iraqi Independent Electoral Commission and the media for their important role in these elections.
